Humans emerge from, are entirely dependent upon, and return to the Earth. This view of Earth as Mother awakens our reverence and gratitude while simultaneously maintaining the worldview that nature is out there, separate from us--a source of never ending abundance to which humans, the Earth's primary children, are entitled. Ultimately, this understanding of the Earth remains rooted in an anthropocentric perspective in which humans are the most important living being with all else reduced into parts to be valued by their usefulness to human aims. While many recognize the harm of this perspective, it is deeply rooted into our worldwide cultures, traditions, and habits. It will take concerted effort to develop a new path.
Earth Folk Fellowship's aim is to join the ongoing conversation and develop a locally-rooted, personally-relevant biocentric path forward. Our starting position is this: The Earth is regenerative--able to create new and more vigorous life. The Earth is holistic--all parts interconnected to the whole. The Earth is communal--for and by all parts of the community. Given this understanding of Earth's wisdom, Earth Folk Fellowship is striving to engage in community building, discourse, education, and hands-on practice to bring us into closer relationship with the Earth. May we enter into fellowship with the Earth not as its dominators or its children but as conscious and equal members of its body as Earth Folk. We are based in Vancouver, Washington. |
